The mobile scanning system is completely self-contained,
with its own power and a wireless connection to the
ILL department. While scanning right in front of their
place in the stacks, the volumes can be immediately
replaced and the request fulfilled moments later while
the scan operator moves directly to the next volume
to be scanned. A central facility communicates with
ILLiad, Ariel, email servers and even FTP-based digital
document delivery systems.
The central scanning system
provides complete control and monitoring
|
The central system in your ILL
department collects information on outstanding
requests from ILLiad and other sources.
|
|
| The central system
broadcasts those requests over your (or its own)
wireless network to all mobile scanning units. |
Remote scanning units operate
independently or under central control
 |
 |
|
The mobile scan operator selects
the next request to be scanned and the central
station removes it from the scan list on other
mobile units.
|
 |
 |
The mobile scan operator locates
the volume and scans using a screen that is designed
for notebook computers and to maximize the quality
of scans. |
Once scanned, the images are transfered
to the central system while the mobile scan operator
moves on to locate and scan the next request. You have
the option to use a wire connection exclusively, if
a wireless network is inappropriate for any reason.

“The central system tracks when
images were scanned, how many pages were scanned and
the
time it
took to scan the pages.”
Meanwhile, back at the central system,
the images are cleaned up and automatically sent to
the requestor as an email attachment or through Ariel,
ILLiad, or indirectly via ftp.
