BSCAN Capture

What is BSCAN capture?
BSCAN is production document capture software. Available in scan station and post processing versions, BSCAN provides out-of-the-box and custom capture systems that convert paper documents to clean, clear electronic images. The images are then filed with all associated index information.

What does BSCAN do?
BSCAN reduces the cost of scanning and indexing documents while greatly reducing the chance of misfiling. BSCAN runs scanners at the highest possible speed while simultaneously performing cleanup and automatic indexing using the industry's most tenacious and accurate barcode and text recognition engines. It can read barcodes, text and marks, while scanning or during post processing. It can also check the integrity of your existing paper files. For example, it can ensure that every folder or packet of documents contains either form A or both forms B and C.

Does Image Access sell scanning software for smaller needs?
Yes. Image Access' "Out of the Box" capture solution, UpFRONT brings the benefits of BSCAN production capture to the low-volume imaging user. UpFRONT is preconfigured to connect to your favorite image management system. Within a few minutes, you can install UpFRONT and set it up for automated processing and indexing.

How easy is it to move from UpFRONT to BSCAN?
UpFRONT was designed with a simple update path. The configurations are compatible. Simply install BSCAN and you're ready to take advantage of BSCAN's powerful features by enhancing the UpFRONT configuration you've been using. Eventually, you'll turn off UpFRONT's menu system and only your customized commands will be available to the user. Your desired workflow will be built into BSCAN. The result: fewer chances for mistakes, less operator training time and as much automation as your documents and needs allow.

What kind of applications is BSCAN used for?
BSCAN is most popular in distribution and trucking, receivables, payables, order processing and backfile conversion applications. However, it is well suited to any application where customizability, barcodes, OCR, indexing and/or high-speed capture is needed. With the introduction of the Bookeye planetary scanner, BSCAN is now popular for archiving delicate and large documents, newspapers and laboratory notebooks.

What is included in a BSCAN Kit?
BSCAN is available in Video or SCSI versions.

BSCAN/HiSCAN Kits include BSCAN software and manual, a scanner interface card (the HiSCAN PCI-bus), scanner interface cables, an annual maintenance contract which includes software upgrades for a year, technical support, and 24-hour product swap-out.

BSCAN/SCSI Kits include BSCAN software and manual, a BSCAN Dongle to interface with the particular scanner model you are using, an annual maintenance contract which includes software upgrades for a year, technical support, and 24-hour product swap-out

Do BSCAN prices vary depending upon what scanner is used?
Yes. Image Access has set very competitive pricing for larger customers who capture many thousands of pages per hour. To maintain our competitive pricing for smaller customers that scan 50 to 500 and 500 to 5,000 pages per day, our product prices vary according to scanner speed.

What other capture products does Image Access manufacture & sell?
Image Access manufactures capture software and adapters as well as specialty scanners. For post processing, BSCANLite and BSCANLite Plus are an exceptional value. UpFRONT, ready-to-use capture software makes life easier. Our HiSCAN PCI high-speed scanner controller cards can save money and make interfacing easier. Our Bookeye scanners and copiers offer the only large-format scanning solution for bound, delicate and large documents.

Are there any special hardware requirements for BSCAN?
Sometimes. Hardware requirements and recommendations can be found in the FAQ's TECHNICAL - Operating Systems and PC Requirements section of this web site.

Is BSCAN's barcode engine sold separately?
No, it is included in BSCAN Standard, BSCAN UpFRONT and BSCANLite Plus products.

Does BSCAN run scanners with SCSI interface? How about video interface?
BSCAN supports numerous scanners with both SCSI and video interfaces.

Does BSCAN support TWAIN scanners?
Yes. TWAIN started as a small scanner interface for uses like desktop publishing. A new TWAIN standard that supports production scanners is under development. We are working in cooperation with scanner manufacturers and other business partners to do all we can to ensure that the new TWAIN is successful as the next scanning interface standard.

What scanners does BSCAN support?
BSCAN supports over fifty production scanners models. A list of supported scanners can be found on this web site. (Go to HOME PAGE -- Products -- BSCAN and then scroll to the bottom of the page for a list of scanners.)

Can BSCAN scan "out-of-the-box"?
Yes. Both BSCAN Standard and BSCAN UpFRONT come with standard configurations that are ready to scan.

Can I configure BSCAN to any scanning application?
Yes, that's one of BSCAN's tried and true claims. With a versatile scripting language, it is virtually unlimited in its ability to meet the application needs common to production capture environments. And configuring BSCAN is quick -- our technical staff offers a configuration service, and they are able to create configurations that meet complex requirements in a single day. Typical BSCAN applications can be scripted in as little as 10 minutes.

Bookeye Scanners

Is there any software sold with Bookeye Scanners?
Yes, it comes with a cable, a PCI controller card and software that allows you to quickly and efficiently index the images by numerous means. While the Bookeye scanner itself has size and brightness controls as well as a photo mode that produces grayscale-like bitonal renderings of photographs, the software, BSCAN, provides additional capabilities such as clip, crop, inverse, mask, endorse and more, with a high-volume production oriented user interface.

Bookeye Scanners can also be purchased separately and used with a number of third-party scanner controller cards that support the Fujitsu-style production scanner 'video' interface. (Go to Bookeye...)

Can you confirm that the Bookeye does not contact the top of the scanned surface?
The Bookeye scanner does not come in contact with the object being scanned, as it is an overhead (or planetary scanner). It's reader head remains about 2 feet from the scanned surface. Components within the head move, but the head does not move. Take a look at the picture of the Bookeye on our web site if you have not seen one yet. If you were scanning a book, the page of the book being scanned could be nearly 4 inches from the scanner bed surface. If it is taller than 4 inches or so, the surface will not be in focus.

Can the scanner scan by sections of documents that can be assembled later? Our maps are 12" by 70", 36" by 40"
Yes.

What interface does the scanner have?
The Bookeye Scanner Models emulates a Fujitsu scanner.

Where can I find technical specifications on the Bookeye scanners & copiers?
The BOOKEYE product page. You'll find all the specifications toward the end of the Bookeye document.

Does the scanner have any lighting conditions required in the room where it is being used?
No.

What is the scanning speed per shot of the Bookeye?
2 seconds per scan of 8.5" x 11" paper (A4) at 200 dpi ranging to a 6 second per scan for 17" x 25" paper (A2) at 300 dpi.

Does it scan in color?
No, but grayscale is expected next year. At this time, color scanning is limited to desktop publishing, art and graphics markets due to the high storage requirements of color images, which is ten to one hundred times that of bitonal images. By the time storage costs have fallen sufficiently, high-speed networks (100 megabits or more) and the Internet's bandwidth has increased substantially, a color Bookeye will be available.

Are there configurations, common options or models or packages to choose from?
The Bookeye scanner is available in two configurations, one capable of scanning up to 11.75 x 16.5 inches and the other capable of scanning up to 17x25.5 inches. Bookeye copiers are available in the same two capacities as well.

Does the scanner have any moving parts?
Only the lens and CCD move. No other moving parts.

Is the size of the scanning area a function of the vertical distance from the overhead piece?
No.

What are estimated run capacities for say an 8 hr. shift?
Up to 5,000 images or more per 8 hour shift.

Are there any parts that regularly need replacing?
Yes, the halogen lamp available from Image Access and from many photocopier parts suppliers.
